What Is Adaptive Difficulty in Mortal Shell II? New Update Out Now

Cold Symmetry's September 5, 2026 Mortal Shell II update adds experimental Adaptive Difficulty and patches parries, Shells, items, bosses, UI, audio, performance, and bugs.

What was announced

Cold Symmetry's New Update Out Now post is live. The headline feature is Adaptive Difficulty, an experimental optional setting under Game > Game Settings. It is off by default and can be toggled at any time. When on, it adjusts enemy damage, health, and break resist in both directions based on what you defeat and where you die, then relaxes toward standard balance as your play changes. Winning can push enemies past the original toughest difficulty and keep climbing. Struggling weakens those same three values and applies a cap so no single attack takes more than a set fraction of your health bar, meaning you cannot be killed outright from full health. Those reductions do not apply during Night Mode, which can still be pushed harder but is never made easier. Nothing on-screen currently shows when the game adjusts. The same post also covers parries and ripostes, Shell abilities, weapons and items, bosses and enemies, story, UI, audio, performance, platforms, and a long bug-fix list.

Key points

  • Adaptive Difficulty is experimental, off by default, found under Game > Game Settings > Adaptive Difficulty, and can be turned on or off at any time.
  • It adjusts enemy strength both ways from what you defeat and where you die, then relaxes toward standard balance over time when play changes.
  • Winning: enemies gain damage, health, and break resist. They can scale past the original toughest difficulty and keep climbing while you keep winning.
  • Struggling: enemies weaken on those same three values. A cap means no single attack takes more than a set fraction of your health bar, so you cannot be killed outright from full health.
  • Those reductions do not apply during Night Mode. Night Mode can still be pushed harder and is never made easier.
  • Nothing is displayed on-screen yet when the setting adjusts; Cold Symmetry marked that as future work.
  • Parries and ripostes: consecutive Infinite Seal parries get a wider window into the wind-up; status effects can apply while an enemy stands up after a riposte.
  • Shells: Sariel's Thornfall, Agonize, and Affliction were retuned; Genessa's Augmentation no longer allows infinite resolve or infinite Faithful Doubles.
  • Weapons and items: easier Gloom retrieval after death, Grisha Summon tweaks, Fragile Tarstones now grant Tarcores when they break, Gloombound Stone no longer loses durability when reclaiming your own Gloom, and a Leech-stack health exploit was closed.
  • Bosses, enemies, and story: Lost Child collision, Harpy hit detection, extra Cursed Child summons, swamp Beacon bats, Grisha Hunter weapons, and several NPC and dialogue fixes.
  • UI, audio, and performance: smaller Beacon icons in fast travel, clearer pause-menu highlighting, damage numbers up to 9,999, Black Market ambience, fog and lighting work, plus crash and localisation fixes.
  • Platforms and bugs: on PS5, a system pop-up no longer pauses the game so screenshots can be used; other fixes include Citadel Annex Spider traversal, Baghead NG+ lockout, dungeon fall-throughs, and Malborn Offspring invulnerability during a phase change.

Context for current players

This summary follows Cold Symmetry's official Steam post New Update Out Now by XBIGY, dated September 5, 2026. A same-day Rock Paper Shotgun recap exists; this page does not treat that recap as a source.

The official notes do not publish a Steam build number, Adaptive Difficulty percentages, or the exact health-bar fraction used by the struggle cap.

This post does not repeat Week 1's console-certification caveat. It does include a PlayStation 5 system-popup change. Check your storefront for the live build.
