The Four Progression Ladders & Caps
Because Mortal Shell 2 separates character stats, weapon power, Shell abilities, and Tarstone passives into distinct systems, player questions about "max level" usually refer to one of four progression ladders:
| Progression System | Standard Cap | Cap-Breaking Method | Primary Currency / Material | Key Milestone & Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harbinger (Character Level) | Level 75 (Practical) | No hard cap; scales past 100 | Gloom at Beacons or Marrow Keep | 42 Shell Points unlocked at level 75 (~1.5M Gloom total) |
| Primary Weapons & Sidearms | Level 16 (+16) | Endless Core raises cap to +20 | Coins + Ventrium / Laterite / Dorsalite / Ossinite | Over 9000 trophy unlocked when maxed at Tarforge |
| Shell Bonds (Affinity) | Tier 4 | None (Hard cap) | Glimpse at Zhirelle / Sester Genessa | Decked Out trophy; unlocks full Shell perk slots (~27 Glimpse per Shell) |
| Tarstones (Runes) | Tier 3 | None (Hard cap) | Kill XP while equipped + Tarcore tempering | Rank 3 passive activation and secondary proc effects |
What is the Max Weapon Level? (+16 Base & +20 Endless Core)
If you are asking "what is the max weapon level in Mortal Shell 2?", the standard answer is Level 16. When you first enhance weapons at the Marrow Keep Tarforge using Muradean Actuator, weapon and sidearm upgrades freeze at +16.
To push your weapons beyond Level 16, you must find and install the Endless Core:
- Reach The Unfound Path: Gather 168 Ova, defeat the three tendril branch guardians (The Monolith, Malborn Offspring, and Orrem), and reach the Hidden Nave Beacon before Zmey.
- Navigate Hidden Nave: Light the torch at the first bonfire to clear the obscuring mist, follow the path, and retrieve the Endless Core from the altar chest.
- Install at Tarforge: Teleport back to Marrow Keep. Interact with the Tarforge table and choose Install Endless Core from the menu (do not speak to Franz; use the anvil menu directly).
- Upgrade to +20: Your upgrade cap instantly lifts, unlocking levels +17 through +20. Pushing a weapon to +20 requires Ossinite, Thoracium, and Coins, and pops the silver trophy Over 9000.
Weapon Upgrade Material Tiers
| Upgrade Tier | Required Materials | Progression Phase |
|---|---|---|
| Levels +1 to +5 | Ventrium + Coins | Early-game weapon & sidearm upgrades |
| Levels +6 to +10 | Laterite + Coins | Mid-game upgrades across Fainweald & early Mammon |
| Levels +11 to +15 | Dorsalite + Coins | High-tier upgrades before endgame dungeons |
| Level +16 (Standard Cap) | Thoracium + Coins | Standard Tarforge maximum ceiling |
| Levels +17 to +20 (Uncapped) | Ossinite + Thoracium + Coins | Unlocked exclusively by installing Endless Core |
Remember that you can smelt unused high-level weapons using the Foundry Stone (found south of Outskirts of Mammon) to refund spent materials if you wish to experiment with another weapon at +16 or +20.
How Many Weapons Can You Max Out in One Playthrough?
A frequent question for endgame builds is: "How many weapons can you max out in Mortal Shell 2?"
- First Playthrough Limit: Because high-tier upgrade materials (Dorsalite for +11–15 and Ossinite for +17–20) are finite world pickups before the final boss, expect to fully max 1 to 2 weapons to +20, and push an additional 2 weapons to +16.
- Smelting & Full Material Refunds: If you want to try a new weapon at maximum power, do not hesitate to use the Foundry Stone (located south of Outskirts of Mammon Beacon). It allows you to smelt any upgraded weapon at the Tarforge to receive a 100% refund of all spent ores and Coins.
- New Game Plus (NG+): When you start NG+, all world materials, chests, and dungeon drops respawn while retaining your current arsenal, making it possible to max all 8 primary weapons and 8 sidearms across multiple cycles.
Is There a Character Level Cap? (Harbinger Level past 100)
The Harbinger is your base body. Unlike games with strict level 99 caps, Mortal Shell 2 has no confirmed hard cap for the Harbinger, and community runs have easily pushed past level 100.
However, grinding past Level 75 has heavy diminishing returns:
- 42 Shell Points: You receive 1 Shell Point per level up to level 75, capping out at exactly 42 usable Shell Points. This is the exact number required to fully max out any Shell's tree at Bond 4.
- Total Cost: Reaching level 75 requires roughly 1,500,000 Gloom.
- Beyond Level 75: Levels 76 through 100+ only grant negligible flat health and stamina increases. Unless you are preparing for New Game Plus cycle 2 or 3, there is zero gameplay or trophy incentive to grind past level 75.
Shell Bond & Tarstone Maximums
In addition to character and weapon levels, complete builds rely on two secondary progression caps:
- Shell Bond (Max Tier 4): Each of the eight Shells (Tiel, Proxima, Eredrim, Smert, Gragu, Genessa, Lazlo, Sariel) has 4 Bond tiers. Raising a Shell to Bond 4 costs about 27 Glimpses at Zhirelle. Because Glimpses are finite before endgame farm loops, focus on maxing one main Shell and one alternate Shell during your first run. Maxing any Shell unlocks the Decked Out achievement.
- Tarstones (Max Tier 3): Tarstones slot into weapons and sidearms to grant active combat arts or passive procs. Stones gain familiarity XP while equipped as you defeat enemies. Once filled, temper them at the Tarforge using Tarcore (unlocked with Etching Needles) to reach Tier 3. Tier 3 is a strict hard ceiling; there is no Endless Core equivalent for Tarstones.
What to Prioritize Maxing First
- Main Weapon to Level 16: Prioritize one versatile primary weapon (e.g. Axatana, Black Needle, or Axe & Dagger) to +16 before spreading Dorsalite to sidearms.
- Primary Shell to Bond 4: Spend your first 27 Glimpses on your favorite Shell so all perk slots are available.
- Harbinger to Level 75: Bank Gloom and level steadily at Beacons until you have 42 Shell Points to distribute.
- One Combat Tarstone to Tier 3: Maximize a top-tier Tarstone like Duality Stone or Grudge Stone.
- Endless Core Weapon to +20: Once in Unfound Path, push your primary weapon from +16 to +20 with Ossinite to make the final boss Zmey substantially easier.

Frequently asked questions
What is the max level in Mortal Shell 2?
There is no single universal max level in Mortal Shell 2. Character (Harbinger) progression can exceed level 100, but level 75 is the practical milestone that grants all 42 Shell Points (~1,500,000 Gloom). Weapons cap at level 16 by default, but can reach level 20 once you install the Endless Core at the Tarforge. Shell Bonds cap at level 4, and Tarstones cap at level 3.
What is the max weapon level in Mortal Shell 2?
The default maximum weapon level is Level 16. However, you can exceed this cap and upgrade primary weapons and sidearms up to Level 20 by obtaining the Endless Core from Hidden Nave in The Unfound Path and installing it at the Marrow Keep Tarforge.
How do you upgrade weapons past level 16?
To upgrade weapons past level 16, complete the Unfound Path dungeon until you reach the Hidden Nave Beacon. Use the torch to navigate through the fog and claim the Endless Core. Return to Marrow Keep, interact with the Tarforge, select 'Install Endless Core', and use Ossinite and Coins to push weapons from +16 to +20. This also unlocks the 'Over 9000' achievement.
Is there a character level cap for the Harbinger?
There is no known official hard level cap for the Harbinger; players and community databases have documented levels well past 100. However, after reaching Level 75 (42 Shell Points), leveling only yields minor raw survivability stats, making 75 the build target for a complete loadout.
How many Shell Points can you earn in Mortal Shell 2?
You can earn a maximum of 42 Shell Points, reached at Harbinger Level 75. 42 points is enough to fully max out any Shell's skill tree once that Shell has reached Shell Bond 4.
What is the max Shell Bond level?
Shell Bonds cap at Level 4. Fully bonding a Shell costs approximately 27 Glimpse at Zhirelle or Sester Genessa in Marrow Keep. Due to finite early Glimpses, expect to max 2 or 3 Shells during a standard first playthrough.
How many weapons can you max out in Mortal Shell 2?
In a single playthrough, you can realistically max out 1 to 2 primary weapons to +20 (and 2 to 3 weapons to +16) due to the finite supply of late-game Ossinite and Dorsalite. However, you can use the Foundry Stone at the Tarforge to smelt unused weapons and refund 100% of your upgrade materials anytime. In New Game Plus, all upgrade ores respawn, allowing you to eventually max out all 8 primary weapons and 8 sidearms.
