Mortal Shell 2 How to Harden — Vatra's Seal

Quick answer: Harden is bound to Vatra's Seal, looted from Harros after the scripted Tar Golem fight. Hold the Seal button to turn to stone, eat one hit, stagger the attacker, then continue the swing. It is excellent against single heavy hits and worse against long combos.

How to unlock Harden

  1. Play the prologue until the Tar Golem encounter. The outcome of that fight is scripted.
  2. After Harros saves you, loot his corpse for Vatra's Seal.
  3. Equip Vatra's Seal. Hold the guard/Seal input to Harden.

Harden is available from that point for the rest of the campaign. You can still swap to Untarnished or Infinite Seal when a fight rewards blocking or parrying instead.

What Harden actually does

When to Harden: red unparryable slams, single heavy boss hits, and continuing an attack you already committed to. When not to: Nameless Captive sword strings, Hexapod tentacle spreads you can simply sidestep, or any fight where you already hold Infinite Seal and can see the impact.

Harden vs block vs parry

SealBest atWeakness
Vatra's Seal (Harden)One big hit, mid-combo armor, forgiving timingCooldown; loses to long strings
Untarnished SealLearning fights, holding block, Perfect Guard farming BreakHeld block fills your own Guard meter
Infinite SealMaximum Break on a clean parrySmaller window, no hold-block

There is no single correct Seal. Swap at Beacons. Eredrim players often Harden or Perfect Guard to set up Shoulder Bash Ripostes; Tiel players often dodge instead of Harden because Shadow Dash wants space, not stone.
