Mortal Shell 2 Best Items to Get Early
Quick answer: Before anything fancy: grab Tiel or Proxima, a melee weapon you can actually hit with, the Etched Needle so Tarforge upgrades work, and extra healing. The Lute and Marsh Pearls are the best early extras. Do not spend your first hour chasing the crossbow as a bare Harbinger.

First-session checklist
| Get this | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A permanent Shell | Tiel east of Widow's Overlook, or Proxima north at the shattered beacon | Do not wander the first hour as a bare Harbinger. This is the most common new-player mistake on X and Reddit. |
| Etched Needle / Tarforge key item | On the route toward the first major boss | You cannot properly upgrade Tarstones until the Tarforge functions unlock. |
| Axe & Dagger or another early melee you can land | See the weapon location guide | A fully upgraded familiar moveset beats an unused S-tier pickup. |
| Troubadour's Lute | One-Legged Wolf Tavern, after Mether's Breath opens the east | Strong early sidearm and a reason to visit Gragu's tavern anyway. |
| Marsh Pearls from Gorf | Hand Gorf a Weltcap | GameSpot flags this as one of the best early permanent-item trades. |
| Revered Gland / Synaptic Vessel | Healing upgrade guide | More Mether's Pulse charges and stronger heals change every boss. |
| Grisha Remnant | Several overworld pickups | Excellent general passive — unequip it before Zmey because of the disappearing-weapon bug. |
What can wait
- Maxing a third Shell. Glimpse is scarce.
- Night Mode, until you have a Shell and a heal upgrade.
- Slayer Seal, if you still want achievements.
- Optional Mammon detours. Fainweald's three gates are the intended power spike.
