Mortal Shell 2 Desolate Peak Walkthrough

Updated September 4, 2026 · Checked for the current launch build

Quick answer: From the Citadel / Gloomshade cliffs, take the Bone Gate on the broken bridge into Desolate Peak. Grab the Crypt Key on the shelf or table above Illusionist's Cache, talk to Baghead only as far as you want, then use the south Bone Gate's right-hand destination for Ruins of Nochte.

How to arrive

  1. Fast travel to Gloomshade Grove or finish the Citadel Gate approach.
  2. Head outside the Citadel Gate and take the right-hand slope. Brigands and Knaves sit on the path.
  3. At the bottom, cross the bridge to a Bone Gate on the cliff edge. Use it. That jump lands you on Desolate Peak.

GameRant's second route starts at Widow's Overlook, Bone Gate south into Nochte, west to Outskirts of Nochte, then the cliff Bone Gate back to this peak. Use that if you already unlocked Smert and are looping.

Crypt Key, Baghead, dungeon

  1. Baghead sits on a throne with followers, opposite a ruined building. This is a Mortal Shell 1 cameo, not a combat encounter.
  2. Enter the building opposite the throne. On the table / shelf above the elevator: a follower note, a coin pouch, and the Crypt Key. Take the key now — the item description does not name the door it opens.
  3. The elevator is Illusionist's Cache: pillar-and-plate puzzle, Shuddering Stone, plus Ventrium and Laterite downstairs.
  4. The Crypt Key opens Hall of Echoes in northeast Fainweald, north of Grisha Hunting Grounds and south of Stones of Remembrance — not a door on this peak.

Baghead: do this on purpose

Finishing Baghead's riddle plays a joke ending and credits. It does not consume Send Ova, but it will yank you out of the overworld. Save first. Full dialogue order: Baghead quest.

If you only want the Crypt Key, you can leave without sitting down. If you want Bag Holder, sit with the followers, pick up Special Moonshine, put it back, and return empty-handed answering Yes.

Leave toward Ruins of Nochte

From the Desolate Peak Beacon, walk to the Bone Gate on the south side. This gate unusually shows two destinations. Look at the right-most Bone Gate to land in the Ruins of Nochte near Prophet's Rest. The other destination is the Outskirts of Nochte cliff you may already have seen from below.

Continue in Ruins of Nochte for Smert, Hag's Path, and the Prisoners' Domain gate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Desolate Peak in Mortal Shell 2?

The reliable route is the Bone Gate / jump transporter on the cliff below the Citadel of Penance, reached from Gloomshade Grove. GameRant also documents a reverse route from Outskirts of Nochte.

Where is the Crypt Key?

On the table or shelf in the ruined building opposite Baghead's throne, directly above the Illusionist's Cache elevator. Take it before you drop into the dungeon.

Does talking to Baghead lock the main ending?

No. Baghead's empty-handed sequence is a joke secret ending with its own credits. Save first if you are not ready to sit through it. The main Send Ova ending is separate.

Evidence: Arrival and Bone Gate follow Rock Paper Shotgun Part 10 and GameSpot's Crypt Key page. Crypt Key pin follows GameRant and Sportskeeda (shelf / table above Illusionist's Cache). Baghead steps are summarized from this site's Baghead page. The two-destination Bone Gate into Nochte follows RPS Part 11. Reviewed September 4, 2026.
